When Meridian Mall wanted to fill their center court for the weekend before the holiday rush, they needed more than a stage and a giveaway table. Three days of continuous foot traffic will break a layout that only looks good in a floor plan — we needed one that would hold up in person, shift after shift.

The brief

The mall's goals were specific: increase dwell time at center court, get people walking into the stores around it rather than just past them, and come away with a list of contacts for their loyalty program. No single vendor booth was going to do all three, so the activation was built as a loop — a path that started at the entrance, moved shoppers past a run of interactive stations, and spat them back out facing the storefronts the mall wanted foot traffic in front of.

Getting the floor right

The layout kept a wide open perimeter and staggered entry points, so the crowd never bottlenecked at a single doorway the way a center-stage setup usually does. Staffing ran in three eight-hour shifts across the weekend, with a lead on-site at all times to manage crowd flow and handle the inevitable equipment hiccups. Sightlines were checked against the neighboring storefronts before anything was built, so the activation drew people in without ever blocking a shop window.

Results

Average dwell time at center court rose 40% across the weekend compared to a typical Saturday. Three of the four retailers directly in sightline reported a noticeable lift in walk-ins during activation hours. The loyalty signup station collected just over 3,000 contacts, which the mall folded straight into their mailing list for the next campaign.
