A season opener draws fans hours before kickoff, and a fan zone only works if it can absorb that crowd without turning into a queue. Riverside Arena brought us in to design and run the zone for their opening matchday — sponsor activations, food and drink, and a stage program, all inside a footprint built for 6,000 people moving through in waves.
The brief
The arena wanted the fan zone to feel like part of the pre-game atmosphere, not a separate ticketed add-on competing for attention. That meant close coordination with gate operations and arena security, and a program timed tightly against kickoff so the crowd naturally thinned out as fans moved to their seats.
Running gameday
We ran the zone with a single event lead reporting directly to the arena's operations office, plus a radio-linked crew covering sponsor activations, stage management, and crowd flow. Sponsor booths were placed along the natural walking path from the transit stop to the gates, so foot traffic did the work rather than signage. A 45-minute stage program ran on a loop, timed to wrap 20 minutes before kickoff.
Results
The zone cleared to under capacity within 15 minutes of the program ending, with no reported bottlenecks at the gates. Three sponsor partners renewed for the rest of the season based on the activation's foot traffic numbers, and the arena has since asked us to run the fan zone for every home opener.
